Detailed Instructions: Local Client
To use the GDA Chat Room, you need an IRC Client. If you don't have an IRC client yet, a good place to start for Windows users is to download mIRC from mirc.com. X-Chat is another free, non-shareware alternative, which you can find at silverex.info, but it will not be covered in the instructions below.
When you first start mIRC, you'll be shown the mIRC options window, with the Connect settings displayed. Perform the following:
- If the options window isn't open, open it by going to Tools->Options, or clicking on the folder and hammer toolbar icon.
- If the Connect menu item isn't selected in the left sidebar, select it.
- Fill in your name, email address, and desired nickname (screen name). Using your forum name would be a good choice, but isn't required.
- Click the Servers menu item in the left sidebar, right beneath Connect
- Click the Add button
- Enter GDA Server into the Description field (you can also name it anything else, such as badnik Server, or Gorgonzola Land).
- Enter irc.badnik.net into the IRC Server field.
- Leave the port field at 6667. Put it in if the field is blank.
- Click the Add button (ignore the rest of the fields).
- Back in the Servers Screen, make sure the first drop down box, IRC Network, is set to All.
- In the IRC Server drop down menu, scroll down until you find GDA Server, or whatever you named the server you just added.
- Click the Connect to Server button.
- If the mIRC Favorites window shows up, escape out of it (click the X icon in the corner).
- In the main status window (Titled: Status: <my name> [...), type /join #GDACHAT into the text field at the bottom and press ENTER.
- You will now be connected to the GDA IRC Channel.
Further questions about IRC or connecting can be posted in the Help Forum. |
